Solus Lumi — Project Case Study

Project: The Monolith | Private Residence, Dubai

Location: Los Angeles

Design Partner: Meyer Davis

Completed: Q3, 2018

The Brief

The client — a private homeowner in Los Angeles — was completing a penthouse with a bold, contemporary aesthetic. The architecture featured clean lines, polished concrete surfaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. The design called for a statement ceiling light that would anchor the double-height living space — something sculptural, dramatic, and unmistakably modern.

The designer‘s vision: a single, monolithic form carved entirely from natural onyx, suspended in mid-air like a floating geological artifact.

Standard chandelier light fixture options could not achieve this vision. The project demanded a fully custom, handcrafted solution — with no metal visible, no traditional chandelier structure, and light emanating from within the stone itself.

Our Solution

Solus Lumi collaborated with the lighting designer and the penthouse architecture team to create a monolithic onyx pendant light — a single continuous form, suspended from black light body, appearing to float weightlessly in the center of the double-height space.
